A private pool is the single biggest upgrade you can make to an Alibag weekend. It turns a hot afternoon into the best part of the day and gives couples and families a space that is entirely their own. But "private pool" can mean very different things from one listing to the next. Here is what to check before you book.
1. Is the pool really private?
Some listings call a pool "private" when it is shared between a few cottages, or overlooked by other rooms. Ask directly: is the pool for our use only, and can anyone else see into it? A truly private plunge pool, attached to your own suite, is a very different experience from a shared pool with a reserved slot.
At The Seascape, our two pool suites each have their own pool used only by that suite's guests. All other rooms share an outdoor common pool set in the gardens.
2. Open-sky or sheltered?
An open-to-sky pool is wonderful for swimming under the stars and in the soft morning light, but it gets the full sun at midday in summer. A sheltered or partly covered pool stays more comfortable in the heat and in light rain. Think about when you will travel:
- Winter and evenings: open-sky pools are at their best
- Summer afternoons and the monsoon: a sheltered pool is easier to enjoy
Our Open to Sky Private Pool suite has a plunge pool with only the sky above it, while the Close to Sky Private Pool suite wraps a more sheltered pool with a living room and study area.
3. Villa or resort suite?
Alibag has two broad kinds of private pool stay. A standalone villa gives a large group a whole house, but you usually manage food, cleaning and arrivals yourselves or through a caretaker. A pool suite inside a resort gives you the same privacy at the pool, plus a restaurant, room service and staff on hand. For couples and small families, a resort suite is usually the easier weekend.
4. Location: town beaches or the quieter south?
Stays near Alibag town and the northern beaches are closer to the Mandwa jetty but busier on weekends. Further south, around Revdanda and Korlai, the coast is quieter and greener, with forts, a lighthouse and long empty beaches nearby. 5. Food and extras
Check whether meals are available on site, and what is included. Popular add-ons at pool stays include floating breakfast served in the pool and a private dinner for special occasions. At The Seascape, floating breakfast can be arranged for the pool suites (at an extra charge), and our in-house kitchen serves authentic Konkani and multi-cuisine food, with candle-light dinners by the sea on request.
6. Questions to ask before you pay
- Is the pool used only by our room, and is it overlooked?
- How deep is the pool, and is it suitable for children?
- Is the pool cleaned and refilled between guests?
- What are the check-in and check-out times, and is early check-in possible?
- What ID is required at check-in?
- What is the cancellation policy, and how much advance payment is needed?
